The 800-ha (2,000-acre) park is an important ecological site. It serves as the home to numerous species of birds, insects and small animals. Moreover, it incorporates almost 160km (100 miles) of footpaths, and some 48km (30 miles) of bicycle paths. This means that even on the busiest summer day, there is plenty of scope to avoid the crowds.

The stables at Amsterdamse Bos offer woodland horse rides, a perfect way to clear the city air from your system (contact Amsterdamse Manege; tel: 020-643 1342).

Take Koenenkade into the park. At the Bosbaan take a right over the canal bridge, then onto another bridge over a shallow inlet to the edge of Nieuwe Meer 2 [map], a surprisingly tranquil lake on the edge of the busy ring road and Schiphol Airport.
